Initial situation

A client who prefers not to be named operates a 2-story manufacturing facility in the floor of a former rock quarry. In close proximity to the facility is a rock slope topped with trees and boulders. In between the facility and rock slope sits a 3,700 liter liquid nitrogen storage tank. The client required slope remediation in the form of rock-scaling, a manual process of using hand tools to dislodge loose rocks to allow them to safely fall to the base of a slope in a controlled manner.

Description

Geobrugg installed a SPIDER® S4/230 temporary rockfall drape to protect the site from falling boulders. The ~9,000 ft2 drape was anchored using wire rope anchors. A throat was designed at the top to prevent debris from rolling over the top of the netting. Bottom anchorage elements were designed to be removed to facilitate access of labor, equipment, and materials around the base of the slope. Unexpectedly, an approximately 20 ton boulder that was intended to be anchored broke off the slope. Geobrugg’s SPIDER® S4/230 controlled the fall of the roughly 10x8x5 ft3 block so that it came to rest at the toe of the slope without damaging the workers, the mesh, the storage tank, or the facility.
