Initial situation

The sanctuary of Monserrate is adjacent to Bogota and an important recreation area for the city. The bush fire in 2015 destroyed the vegetation and the soil cover. Thus blocks of rock were exposed and the danger of accidents rose.

Due to this threat, the road was completely closed. A solution that would provide safety, comfort, and durability had to be found to protect the over 2 million people mounting up the hill throughout the year.

Description

EL IDIGER institute evaluated systems to control the rock falls in order to to re-open the path. WARCO SAS and Geobrugg advised during the design and provided the rockfall barriers. Finally five barriers were installed along the trail to cover the exposed areas. Installed RXE-3000 barriers are 4 m high and have a total length of 215 m.
