Initial situation

A sudden landslip in November 2021 was the first indication of underlying instability of the existing chalk cutting on the northern side. Immediate reactive works were needed to clear vegetation and underlying chalk material from the cess and track.

Tony Gee was engaged as the designer to engineer a permanent solution to ensure the stability of the cutting going forward. BAM Ritchies were chosen as the specialist geotechnical contractor to install the solution.

Geology

Lewes Nodular Chalk Formation, Seaford Chalk Formation And Newhaven Chalk Formation (undifferentiated) - Chalk. Sedimentary Bedrock formed approximately 72 to 94 million years ago in the Cretaceous Period. Local environment previously dominated by warm chalk seas.

Description

A solution of TECCO G45/2 mesh was chosen along with TECMAT within the upper half of the slope to provide slope stability and erosion protection. The final solution included 340 rock bolts, the lower half of which were installed from track level during a possession with the help of Pro Rail Services long-reach RRV’s.
