Initial situation

In June 2013 the Town of Canmore experienced a significant debris flood. The June 2013 debris flood resulted in high rates and volumes of sediment transport, channel aggradation, avulsions and bank erosion on the highly developed Cougar Creek fan, resulting in severe damages to channel works, infrastructure, highways, crossing structures, and private residences.

Description

The town needed a barrier that could withstand and provide protection against a debris flood event of similar magnitude, capture a large volume of sediment and logs within the Cougar Creek channel, upstream of the fan apex, allow passage of wildlife and humans either through or around the installation, and allow access for clean-out of debris.
