Initial situation

The Chlebbach is a small stream in Appenzell that poses a considerable flood risk for neighborhoods, a road and a railway during heavy rainfall. In the steep section of forest on the Nieschberg mountain, the stream sweeps large quantities of debris and wood away from the slopes during thunderstorms. Hundreds of cubic meters of material can be transported down the valley within a few minutes, as the 2011 storm demonstrated when the Alpstein road was blocked by debris.

Description

As a first protective measure, a debris flow protection/gravel retention system was installed in the Chlebbach ravine. It holds back up to 400 cubic meters of Debris, consisting of stones or wood, but allows water to flow through, increasing the retention volume. In the event of an overload, additional material can flow over without damaging the high-tensile steel wire ring net.

This measure is intended to protect the railroad line and Alpsteinstrasse from future debris deposits. Further expansion steps on the stream will follow in 2026.
