Avalanche (non-)prevention structure

28 March 2018

This clip from the Caucasus shows an avalanche prevention structure. It cannot stop a wet snow avalanche. The already creeping avalanche (snowslide) tears the barrier down.

The picture below (also from the Caucasus) shows a Geobrugg SPIDER® Avalanche prevention structure which stabilizes potentially unstable snow layers and avoids that they are triggered by avalanches.

Our flexible systems are designed to adapt to varying snow depths along a slope. Protection measures need to be installed in the starting zone of avalanches. Ideally, they are designed according to the worldwide accepted Swiss Federal Technical Guideline: Defense structures in avalanche starting zones.
