Initial situation

In the territory of Ardesio, a ski slope had been built in a wooded area. Deforestation and land modeling resulted in the loss of vegetation cover and a significant alteration in the geotechnical conditions of the slope. There is also a river nearby, which further contributes to the complexity of the hydrogeological context.

The infiltration and percolation of water into the ground causes it to become saturated. Once saturation is reached and water begins to flow down the slope, medium- to deep-seated mass movements can be triggered, involving significant volumes of soil consisting of medium- to coarse-grained materials.

Description

Special prefilled barriers were installed to prevent bottom mass movements of the debris. The concept of these barriers is to distribute the static load of possible deep-seated mass movements among the 17 barriers, which are spaced 15 to 25 m apart from each other. Flexible ring net barriers allow subsurface water to flow freely through the barriers, while retaining the moving mass.

The barriers were installed at a depth of approximately 3 meters from the ground level to intercept and block these flows of water and coarse debris. This ensures semi-rigid behavior, allowing the rock blocks to settle and stabilize on the ring mesh structure. With a conventional installation, this effect would not have been guaranteed.
