Lierna SS 36

The SS 36 State Road (Lecco-Colico highway), was affected by a significant and unexpected rockfall event around Lierna. The rocks hit the road at the entrance of the Scoglio tunnel and caused the sudden closure of traffic on The SS 36.

The rockfall incident revealed the limitations of the existing rockfall prevention system dated back to '80s, and the severe risk for the users of the highway.

After the design analysis of Dr. Vincenzo Giarratana of StradeAnas and Studio Protea of Dervio (LC), a rockfall protection system was ordered:

5 meters high, 100 meters long and with an energy absorption capacity of 2000 kJ.

The prompt delivery of the foundation system and subsequent installation of the barrier allowed to reopen the State street after only 4 weeks.
