Rockfall protection galleries have proved their worth as structures for lessening the effects of rockfalls. But there is a growing number of rockfall protection galleries for which the potential hazards exceed their dimensioning capacity. The newly developed TECCO® damping modules from Geobrugg increase the protective effect of existing and future rockfall protection galleries, simultaneously reducing the static loading of the system. With the CE marking, Geobrugg rockfall protection barriers GBE-500A and GBE-1000A for impact energies of 500 kJ and 1000 kJ verify their conformity with the requirements of the ETAG 027 guideline. Flexible spiral rope nets such as the SPIDER® rockfall protection system have proved their worth as a cost-effective alternative to square or rectangular net coverings of stranded ropes. The aims of large scale fields tests carried out in connection with a research project and under near real conditions were threefold: to gain a better understanding of the supporting behavior of the rockfall protection systems and their interaction with the nails, to thoroughly analyze the force distribution and to investigate the influence of dynamic influences in scale 1:1 under various boundary conditions. The ABOXX anchor protection system consists of a box with integrated braking elements. It is intended to prevent tensioned anchors with a risk of fracture from being launched into the travel lanes of freeways. The effectiveness of the system has been proven through several tests with the Federal Research Institute WSL. While an unprotected anchor can cover more than one meter in 0.152 seconds, a tensioned anchor protected by the ABOXX system covers only around 15 – 30 centimeters in the same time, and is reliably brought to a halt.
