Innovative rockfall protection: barrier and drape in one system
In Valais / Switzerland, Geobrugg – together with the Swiss Federal Research Institute WSL – is researching a combination of rockfall barrier and rockfall drape (attenuator). The barrier brakes the rockfall and the drape allows it to be rolled into a catch zone under control.

Tunnel des Pontis (CH): World’s strongest flexible gallery roof (2000 kJ)
For the Tunnel des Pontis in Canton Valais, Switzerland, Geobrugg engineers have designed a rockfall gallery 60 m long with 11 m cantilever posts and an impact energy of 2000 kJ - far exceeding previous dimensions. The supporting structure calculations were completely computer simulated . Lengthening the existing tunnel would have been eight times more costly than this gallery construction.

Increase of profitability in the mining industry with flexible rockfall barriers
In open-pit mines flexible rockfall barriers – crash tested to extreme impact energies – are increasingly installed to allow for steeper pit walls while at the same time providing effective protection for workers, equipment, access roads, tunnel portals and buildings. Saved mining costs and the value of additional ore considerably exceed the installation cost of flexible barriers.

| Combined debris flow and shallow landslide barriers in Scotland
An 80 m long, 4 m high shallow landslide barrier and a 15 m wide and likewise 4 m high debris flow barrier were installed at the “Rest and be Thankful“ mountain pass in Scotland after a debris flow event caused around 400 tons of material to slide on to the road in 2007 followed two years later by 1070 tons of material.

Sinkhole protection system prevents collapses in the roads and highways sector
The sinkhole protection system pursues the notion of partial protection with the aim of reducing the risk of sinkholes and the associated costs to an acceptable level. Here, in the case of an event the system deforms to the extent that a sinkhole is visually perceptible meanwhile not endangering road users. Compared to a rigid structure, it can then react promptly to prevent a progressive breaking away of the subsoil.
