| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | How will multi-level debris flow barriers perform as replacement for check dams? The long-time performance of Geobrugg debris flow barriers as a substitute for concrete check dams is investigated in Merdenson VS / Switzerland inside the framework of a research project. Three staged barriers shall be filled by natural events and then left without cleaning. The filled barriers form steps in the torrent and protect against unwanted erosion of the torrent bed and flanks. The uppermost barrier serves as erosion protection for the foundation of the 10 m high concrete dam. As a result of two debris flow events approximately approx. 750 m3 debris material were retained by the barriers.

The use of TECCO® started in phase 3 and 4 for which a TECCO® stabilization solution was presented, which adapts very well to this railway line cutting. Aesthetically the TECCO® solution is preferable, maintaining a naturally greened slope appearance. .

The new high-energy barrier system RXI-500 is made for very difficult situations: It can be used in places where large blocks are expected to break off and where large fall heights and bounce widths are inevitable. Because the energy absorption capacity of RXI-500 barriers is higher than many existing or planned concrete galleries, the system can either supplement intended construction methods or even replace them entirely. In addition, it is suitable as an alternative in cases when, for topographic or aesthetic reasons, it is not possible to build a berm.

Since the certification test, carried out in accordance with the Swiss guidelines in October 2006, a total of 6 clients decided to install RXI-500 barrier systems. Two of the barriers are in Italy and one of each in Germany, Switzerland, Spain and Australia.
