Design steps for proper protection against debris flow events
Together with the responsible agencies and local consultants, specifically endangered areas such as torrents, canyons, bridge openings and channels are analyzed. The following parameters are required for designing an effective protection system:
estimated debris flow volume
type of debris flow (scree avalanche or mud avalanche flow)
density, kind and size of expected debris flow material
geometry of the blocked channel area
evaluation of different installation site alternatives for the debris flow barrier (a lesser gradient minimizes the impact velocity and increases the collection volume).
